Witnesses testify in Waipouri murder case

Sun 17 Jun 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

Palmerston North gay man Stanley Waipouri was beaten to death after one of his alleged killers walked in on him having sex with the other man charged with his murder, the Palmerston North District Court heard on Friday. Written witness statements handed up at a depositions hearing for Andre Gilling, 18, and Ashley Benjamin Arnopp, 20, have revealed how police believe the 39-year-old homosexual man was murdered, reports the Manawatu Standard this weekend. Stanley Waipouri moved to Palmerston North from South Auckland to escape the misery of a world where he didn't fit in, and was a well- known member of the gay community "whose only downfall was to pick up strangers and invite them back to his flat", witnesses say. Arnopp and Gilling have been charged with murder after Waipouri's body was discovered on 23rd December last year. They have been remanded in custody pending trial. If found guilty of murder or manslaughter each faces a 9 year to life sentence. Three stories from the Manawatu Standard are linked below.
