Pair to stand trial for Waipouri killing

Fri 15 Jun 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

Two young Palmerston North men have been committed to stand trial for the late December murder of gay man Stanley Waipouri. Minutes ago two JPs overseeing the depositions hearing, as well as prosecution and defence lawyers, conceded there is a prima facie case to answer. Ashley Arnopp, aged 20, and Andre Gilling, 18, were charged with murder after Waipouri's body was discovered in a Palmerston North house on December 23, 2006. Police evidence and images of the injuries sustained by Waipouri have been suppressed. A forensic pathologist giving evidence this morning described extensive head, neck and facial injuries sustained by Waipouri, but was unable to indicate the exact cause of death, which appears to have been the result of numerous 'blunt force' blows to the head, face and neck. The pathologist said there was also some evidence of possible strangulation amongst Waipouri's many injuries. Gilling and Arnopp have been remanded in custody pending the trial. If found guilty of murder or manslaughter each faces a 9 year to life sentence.     Ref: GayNZ.com (j)
