Ellie Kat crowned

Sun 3 Jun 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

Drag personality ‘Ellie Kat’ triumphed over seven other glamorous contestants to be crowned the capital’s ‘Queen of all Queens’ – Miss Drag Wellington – last night at Imerst nightclub. Kat tells GayNZ.com she’s “very excited and pleased” to have won the title. Over 400 people were at the show. For her ‘talent’ section she chose to perform to the Gnarls Barkley hit ‘Crazy’. Brendan Goudswaard, 22, has been performing as Ellie Kat since his talent quest at Wellington High School. He says he even appeared in drag for his school class photo and ID card. “Ellie Kat said all the right things – support our community, help the NZ AIDS Foundation, prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS,” an attendee reported back. In second place was Sasha Frieze, and third was Nalia Star, performing a live number in an outfit resembling Bette Midler. All the other entrants lip synched. Miss Ribena and the team from Auckland’s Family nightclub were there at the show, and have now decided to fly Goudswaard to Auckland for a special K’ Road performance next month.
