A Tauranga man stabbed in the face with a bottle outside a public toilet in the early hours of this morning was not the victim of anti-gay violence, say local police. The 18-year-old victim was taken to hospital with gashes to his face, in a case several GayNZ.com readers emailed us to comment was reminiscent of the stabbing murder of Tauranga gay man John Rogers near a public toilet in July 2002. Acting Sergeant Matt Elliot tells GayNZ.com that today's attack was “absolutely not” a gay-related issue, saying the strip of bars and pubs where the man was stabbed had regular problems with alcohol-fuelled disorder.
