The NZ Council of Trade Unions in Canterbury is having a meeting next week to gauge interest for setting up an active branch for ‘Out @ Work' in the region. Gay, lesbian, intersex, transgender, takataapui, fa'afafine and bisexual union members are invited to attend. There will be discussion about the recent ‘Out @ Work Kamp', and a brainstorming session about what could be done to make Out @ Work an effective representative structure in Canterbury. “We hope that as many people as possible can attend this meeting so we can get lots of good ideas,” says Karena Brown, Convenor of CTU Unions Canterbury. Out @ Work celebrates diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity. Their biannual ‘Kamp' on 19th and 20th April was in Wainuiomata, just out of Wellington. Thirty-five delegates gathered for a mix of workshops, planning sessions and speakers, including MPs Tim Barnett, Maryan Street and Metiria Turei, Pacific public health expert Fuimaono Karl Pulotu Endemann, Roslyn Noonan and Jack Byrne from the Human Rights Commission, Nathan Brown from Out There and CTU secretary Carol Beaumont.
