Further members of Auckland's LGBT and Ponsonby community have expressed support and offered their thoughts on the Hero Parade's possible return in 2009. Johnny Givens, Chairperson of the Gay Auckland Business Association (GABA), says he was pleased to hear the great news that the Hero Parade could be running through the city again in the future. “What a marvelous opportunity of our community take back the street and show our splendour, acceptance and diversity,” he says. “I am sure the GABA members will be supportive of such a fun event. It's a wonderful public window of opportunity to showcase our organisations, activities and businesses. “The Hero Parade will support the growth and development of our people's talent, ingenuity, and confidence. It will be fabulous to have a Hero Aroha Parade celebrating our love, passion and commitment to our relationships, our community, our city and ourselves.” Paul Heard, co-owner of Urge bar on K' Road, says Urge would plan to have a float in the Parade. “Our only desire is that the parade is for the community, and displays diversity. “We would actually prefer K' Road as the route, as it's shorter and more 'our' scene. We would really like it to be a situation where collectors could collect at entry points to the street so maximum revenue collections can be made.” Heard believes we have to be wary of the Parade being “just a freak show for all the out of town folks”. “[Sydney] Mardi Gras is only watched by small pockets of Gay/Lesbian groups these days,” he believes. Martin Leach, the editor of the Ponsonby News, says he's delighted by the announcement of the parade's return. “We just wish it was happening sooner. “I've only been in NZ since 2001, so I've only been present for one parade before it sadly finished. We would definitely support it with editorial coverage and photos – just like we did when we covered the Big Gay Out. “Anything that brings visitors and locals out into our streets is a very good thing for Ponsonby and its businesses, and the parade has such a great vibe and energy.” Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
