A company called 'Active Media in Wellington is planning to launch a new, free, monthly glossy magazine for the gay community in the capital. Editor Corey Ladbrook says ‘86' will focus on reporting topics that represent an evolving culture. “The magazine, like our market, is smart, socially aware and so so stylish,” he explains. The title ‘86' is a reference to the year of Homosexual Law Reform in New Zealand. “It's also a code to exit a bar, is recognised as a ‘happy number' in maths, and is a war term for ‘a man down',” laughs Ladbrook. ‘86' will join existing publications Jack, GayNZ.com Update, Express and locally-produced occasional newspaper Proud, all currently available to pick up free from Wellington gay venues. Ladbrook says his new magazine will be unique. “86 is socially conscious of the purchases we make into what defines our identity in the 21st century. 86 doesn't buy into stereotypes or cliches, instead 86 is invested in our nuances – differences – as a representation of the community. “86 is unique in the commentary and development of the culture through organisation of opinion and the communication of images,” Ladbrook enthuses. The editor says 500 Wellington subscribers are signed up already, with the first issue out next month. “We'll launch with a massive ‘80's style party at Imerst.” It's understood the first issue will contain an interview with local takataapui entertainer Mika.
