ChCh: Safe sex message gets mobile

Fri 23 Mar 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

The New Zealand AIDS Foundation's Gay Men's Health team will promote an interactive safe sex texting service for gay and bisexual men, believed to be the first of its kind in Australasia, at a special event at Christchurch's CRUZ nightclub on Saturday 7th April. Users of the “Safe Sex Txt” service can text in any questions or concerns they have about sexual health for 50 cents, and receive a personalised reply from an NZAF health promoter within 24 hours. The service has received over 500 texts from users since it began in February. Guests at the party will receive an instruction card for using the service and safe sex packs, and will be able to enter a text competition on the night to win spot prizes - T-shirts, bar tabs, meal vouchers - and also the chance to win a new cellphone from Vodafone to the value of $200. “Texting is a great way to get timely and discreet advice about sexual health, which is why we've launched this service,” says NZAF Gay Men's Health Promoter for the South Island, Brent Mitchell. “Gay and bisexual men are still the highest risk group for HIV transmission in New Zealand - 70 gay and bisexual men were diagnosed with HIV in 2006 - that's one every five days.” The Safe Sex Txt Christchurch launch will be held at CRUZ, 90 Lichfield St, from 9pm onwards. Entertainment will be provided by Beaver Brown, Kola and Miss Cindy. Gay Men's Health would like to thank the team at CRUZ for supporting the launch of Safe Sex Txt in Christchurch.     Ref: NZAF (m)
