TVNZ's new ‘ondemand' website video service features a classic New Zealand gay couple, and looks set to feature many more local LGBT voices in coming months. One complete 1986 episode of Peter Hudson and David Halls' cookery and entertainment show ‘Hudson and Halls' is now available to view free from TVNZ's ‘ondemand' website, launched yesterday. Hudson and Halls' flamboyant TV appearances throughout the 1980's had a huge effect on gay people who watched them, wrote Lesbian and Gay Equality's Nigel Christie in 2001. “I was a teenager, and I ‘knew' that Hudson and Halls were a couple – but I never talked about it with my family. Nor did anyone else talk about it. It was “known”, but it was not known… if anyone had formally announced that Hudson and Halls were both homosexual men, and were living together in a relationship, it could possibly have meant the end of their popularity”. Sources inside TVNZ could not yet confirm whether new LGBT programme ‘The Outlook', to be broadcast on TV2 later this Autumn, would also be made available free to view on the new website. A senior decision-maker at the broadcaster told GayNZ.com, “it seems likely. There's no reason why it shouldn't be made available ‘ondemand' so more people can watch it.” The Hudson and Halls' episode from 17th January 1986 is available to view on the link below.
