Pride Centre fraud trial this November

Tue 20 Mar 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

After almost three years' wait, Auckland Pride Centre former employee Martin van der Riet will face trail this November, says the Auckland District Court. van der Riet was arrested in February 2005 on eighteen separate charges involving nearly $40,000 worth of Missing Pride Centre missing funds. Although he was released on bail, his passport was seized to prevent him leaving the country. The charges van der Riet faces include using a document for pecuniary gain, and one charge of perverting the course of justice. Each charge carries a maximum seven-year sentence. Detective Constable Richard Morgan of the Auckland Commercial Fraud Squad told GayNZ.com in March last year that, while awaiting trial, van der Reit is unable to leave the country or be in paid employment. “He hasn't got a work permit, so he's not allowed to work.” At the time of van der Riet's arrest, police said they believed the case against him is strong.     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
