New gay and lesbian nightlife for Napier

Wed 14 Mar 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

Gay nights in a straight bar, and a ‘Slick Summer Dance Party' are just two exciting developments creating New Zealand's newest gay scene. Lesbians and gay men in the Hawkes Bay are invited to join in on new initiatives designed to bring an active LGBT nightlife to the Napier/Hastings area. Gay bar nights getting underway on Saturday 14th April at the ‘Assembly Point' - at the back entrance to Latinos Bar in Herschell Street (opposite the museum), say locals. “These have been started by a young guy called Alex and entrance is free. Just turn up and swan in. The entrance to the area upstairs is curtained off and the bar owner is being schooled on what the GLBT patrons want in terms of a segregated place that a large crowd will come to,” says Dominict, a poster on our GayNZ.com messageboards. “Very little has happened in Napier at an open social level for several years despite the desire being there for more to be going on, so these developments are really welcome,” he continues. A ‘Slick Summer Dance Party' is also planned, for later this month. The organising team – Zac, Kae, Kimberly and Liane – call themselves ‘Slick', and say the party is a lesbian initiative but will be for gays as well as lesbians, and also open to any gay-friendly people. “We are planning to do a party every three months or so, and with the first one getting heaps of support, we are hoping this continues,” say the Slick team. The party will take place at the Pacific Surf Life Saving Club on Marine Parade, Napier on the Saturday 31st March. “The boys at Zigg Zagg cafe in Napier are selling tickets, or people out of town can email us at slickparty@hotmail.com and we will organise tickets for them.”     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
