If last year's Oscars was the ‘gay' one, this year's event surely belonged to the lesbians. A velvet-suited Ellen DeGeneres presented the awards in a chatty and relaxed style. Mentioning the diversity of talent up for awards, she quipped, “when there's been so many negative things said about people's race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, I want to put this out there – if there were no blacks, Jews and gays, there would be no Oscars”. Also suited was Melissa Etheridge, who thanked her wife Tammy Lynn as she took an Oscar for her song ‘We Need To Wake Up' from Al Gore's global warming doco ‘An Inconvenient Truth'. Last year's event featured much gay-related commentary and humour, as two gay-themed movies, ‘Brokeback Mountain' and ‘Capote', were up for best picture.
