Wellington club

Wed 21 Feb 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

The former ‘Pound' nightclub, renovated and reopened as mixed venue ‘Spicehammer' last December, has now closed its doors. The nightclub's owner Julian Barsony was unable to be reached for comment, but local reports suggest the venue has been closed at least two weeks. Barsony had made many improvements to the club's interior, which he said had been ‘a shell' when he'd brought it. Each Friday was officially ‘Fabulous and Gay Fridays', but on those nights Spicehammer found it hard to complete with nearby new all-LGBT nightclub ‘iMerst', which opened last October. Rhys Hakkens of iMerst says he's working hard to ensure there's a unique event there each weekend. Future events planned include Wellington Fringe Festival shows, the after-party for Wellington's Gay and Lesbian Fair on 10th March, and the ‘Mr Gay Wellington' pageant, planned for 7th April.     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
