Chch: Crowd expected for

Fri 16 Feb 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

The co-organiser of a ‘Kiss-In' protest planned for tonight at Christchurch's Grumpy Mole Saloon says she's had a lot of interest from the community and is expecting a large crowd. Earlier this month, eighteen-year-olds Lynda Boyd and Steph Hansen were at the Saloon on their first date when they were told to “get the f... out” after sharing a same-sex kiss on the dancefloor. Ann Charlotte says she was moved to help organise the ‘peaceful protest' after hearing the story of the two girls. She's encouraging people to take pictures of the event with their camera phones – and doubts this will be going against the Saloon's policy. “My daughter was telling me of an evening there with two girls in a jelly wrestling pool doing all sorts of things, and men standing around taking photos with their camera phones,” she says. “We've asked people to arrive between 9.30 and 10.30pm, and make sure they're sober. Then, at around 10.30pm, I'm suggesting we take over the dance floor, and have the ‘Kiss-In'” Charlotte's not sure how long the kissing will last, however. “It'll depend how stroppy the security and management get,” she says. GayNZ.com plans to have pictures from the event online this weekend.
