Civil Union for Waihou lesbian couple

Wed 14 Feb 2007 In: New Zealand Daily News

A lesbian couple have committed to each other in what is believed to be the first Civil Union in the small North Island town of Waihou. “We are just two women who love each other and decided to make a legal commitment to each other,” Leanda Lynch told the Piako Post. “We don't judge other people and we hope that others won't judge us.” Lynch's ceremony on 3rd February with her partner of five years Margy Lemberg was held at the Pioneer Memorial Church and attended by around 60 of their family and friends, who were all “101% supportive of us,” say the happy couple. The two women first contacted each other over the internet in 2002, and after a few weeks' getting to know each other on the net and over the phone, they decided to meet in the nearby town of Stratford. Arriving for the meeting, Lynch remembered asking God for a café, a florist, and a parking space. “I got all three,” she laughs, “and that's the sort of blessing that in my opinion God has given our relationship all the way through.”     Ref: Piako Post (m)
