Gay commentary websites are swirling with speculation as to whether a MySpace video for a song titled “The Bible Says” with the chorus “God Hates Fags” was made by an actual fundamental ex-gay preacher, a parody made by a performance artist, or, perhaps, a combination of both. A sample of the lyrics: "Read the Bible/ You'll be sure/ To enter heaven/ There's no back door ... 'cuz God Hates a Fag." MySpace and YouTube have both removed the video – but it has recently become available on the link below this article. The internet ‘blogger' jury is still out on whether the song and the man are real or not, but more and more internet viewers say they believe the entire video and song to be a brilliant hoax to make fun of fundamental homophobes. Whatever the intentions were behind the song and its singer, Donnie Davies, who says on his personal website he is an ex-gay and a youth pastor in Houston, are receiving an enormous amount of attention. Gay commentator and author Dan Savage thinks Davies is serious about his message that “God hates fags” but is using humor to get his message across. Savage said Davies is a shrewd bigot, citing his use of double entendre in some of the lyrics to the song and video: “Davies is trying to be funny — heaven's ‘back door,' thanking Andrew Sullivan for ‘getting behind [him],' kneeling next to the guy at the control board — but he means it when sings ‘God hates a fag.' He may not be ex-gay (those desperate dudes don't have a sense of humor about their predicament), but a straight religious bigot with a sense of humor. “We're watching this video — all of us secular urban hipsters — because it's hilarious. Which means that Donnie, through the use of humor, is reaching people that he might not otherwise. And his message is this: Laugh your asses off, sinners, but the bible says a man should not lay with a man … Donnie Davis is engaged in a deadly serious effort — a seriously successful effort — to spread the fundy message about homosexuality (it's a choice, god hates it) through the intentional use of humor.” Davies himself has posted on his website videos as well as messages stating emphatically he is not a hoax. In a new YouTube video this week, Davies said he was “disturbed” by the number of people accusing him of not being who he says he is. He then goes on to publicly decry people for giving him a hard time about being fat, telling viewers he's lost 140 pounds and can slam dunk a basketball. On his personal website, Davies claims to be a “reformed homosexual.” "I am in fact a reformed homosexual and I'm trying to let people know that there is an escape from being gay,” he states. “By letting people know that ‘God hates a Fag' I am doing Gods work, I'm preaching.” Davies goes on to say he has created a program to “cure people of homosexuality” named C.H.O.P.s (Changing People into Ordinary People) and that Oscar Wilde, who he states was also a “reformed homosexual,” is a hero of his. “He went to prison for his sins. Once he was alone with his thoughts, in jail, he saw the errors of his ways and repented. He died as a Christian,” according to the Davies website. “While I'm not advocating jailing all Homosexuals, I do think it would benefit them greatly. It would be for their own good. When a person is forced to think they will generally be able to see their problems and solve them by themselves.” Ref: New York Blade (m)
