Winners at the ChCh Drag Oscars

Fri 27 Oct 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

The 24th Annual Christchurch Drag Oscars were held at the Civic Theatre on Sunday 22nd October, and organiser Miss Mole tells GayNZ.com she was pleased the night was a great gig for the city. "Having the bigger venue made the night gel a bit better than it had in previous years. It's a grand venue for an awards ceremony. The dance floor was packed the entire night also." Money raised for charity from the Oscars hasn't been added up yet, but will benefit the SPCA's work with neglected animals, and BNZ's Save the Kiwi fund, among many other community groups. Mole says, "I want to praise up the people who did more work than I did – there were 107 people working on it." For an hour before the show, Daphne Bush and Miss Mole were on the red carpet outside, where there was one car accident, reveals Mole. “A car went into the back of another car because of me running onto the road. There was no real damage but there was an almighty bang.” The Oscars went to: Hospitality: Crispy from Menfriends Best Supporting Actress: Stella Roadkill for S.O.S. from Cruz Valued Work for the Community: The four girls who run the Brighton Lesbian Dancers Business of the Year: Bruce Morrison for Christchurch Homestay Drag Diva: Christchurch's Miss Cindy Male Icon: Chris Eason Female Icon: Jacqueline Anne Bitch of the Year: Miss Kandy Kane (for moaning, groaning and bitching all year, says Miss Mole) Miss NZDating: Keith Hilton, for his fantastic page on NZDating Best Actress: Joanne Clark Best Dressed on the Night: Kathleen Quinnliven and the Q-topia team dressed as ‘Air Homo' hostesses Mr Spunky Hunk: ‘The gorgeously blond' Mick Taylor Sexiest Woman: Astro Woman of the Year: Angela Wilson from Q-topia (the youngest ever woman of the year) Queen of the Year: Miss Starlight Lifetime Achievements: Brent Pollard for his work with Chameleon Bar, and Brent Mitchell for his work with Pride Week 2006. Outstanding Work Throughout the Country: Miss Ribena Person of the Year: Miss Sophie. Miss Ribena hosted the event with Deb Stanaway – Deb was dressed in leather. When Ribena won her Oscar she told Miss Mole "I'm going to put it with all my Golden Stiletto Awards, girl!" Miss Mole replied: "Was that the event you organised yourself and then won about ten of them?" Special guests included Civil Union celebrant Anne Stubbersfield, Labour MP's Lianne Dalziel, Tim Barnett and Georgina Beyer, and Christchurch Mayor Gary Moore. Mole says, "They're all hounding me now – asking 'when's the next one?' But it's the last one I'm doing. I'm moving on to something else. Also, you've got to have a life away from the gay community – it's keeps you grounded so you don't take it too seriously. "I think it's time for some young faces and some new ideas too. "There are no more big events this year, and I don't think I'll even be in Christchurch next year," explains Mole. "I'm looking at Auckland – I want to be the new resident drag queen at Family! The Mayor of Christchurch wants me to run for Mayor though – he's going to back me, but I'm not sure about that," she says with a smile. Mole says whatever happens she'll definitely attend the next Christchurch Oscars in 2007. "I'll sit in the audience, and just watch, applaud and criticize!"     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
