Elton John coming to Wellington?

Sat 21 Oct 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

Pop singer Elton John looks set to visit Wellington in apparently his only New Zealand concert, the Dominion Post reports. Details are still being completed, but Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast says "My understanding is negotiations are well advanced and going very well. "I'm holding December 6 (free) in my diary." Sir Elton last played in the capital at Athletic Park in 1984, and once confirmed, will perform at Wellington's Westpac Stadium following concerts in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the newspaper reported. "The only concert in New Zealand, it's going to be huge for Wellington and I have no doubts that 40,000 seats are going to sell," Ms Prendergast said. Sir Elton's new album is called The Captain and the Kid. He's currently touring Las Vegas, and has a show next weekend in New York before flying to Canada. Eight Australian concerts are planned for late November through to early December. Last month, the audience at Poland's Sopot Festival gave Sir Elton an ovation when he said: "I'm just a performer who plays people some music. I hope that my music helps people to forget about their problems for few hours. But I'm also a gay man and I've heard that gay people face violence in Poland. Leave us (gays) alone. We don't want to harm anybody. We just want to love and be loved."     Ref: Dominion Post (m)
