Wellington Proud posters ripped down

Thu 5 Oct 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

In a rare bout of homophobia in the capital, posters for Sub Nine's FAG party—the official after-party for the UniQ ‘High School Prom' Ball—have been ripped down in the Wellington suburb of Newtown. The striking poster, featuring a near-naked cartoon guy and the word ‘fag' in bold letters along the top, have been ripped down from a poster display site by the Newtown playground, while other posters featuring The Beatgirls Birthday right beside it have been left intact. When contacted by GayNZ.com, the poster's designer, Andy Boreham, said he's not entirely surprised. “The whole look of the poster was designed so no one could ignore it. We also thought it would be a great way to reclaim the use of the word fag and really have something totally ‘out there'. I'm just shocked that it's happened in Newtown, given the diverse melting pot of its people and that the suburb has hosted the annual gay and lesbian fair for more than 20 years.” As part of Wellington's Proud week events, the FAG party takes place this Saturday 7 October at Sub Nine with a $10 door charge. However if you hold a ticket for the UniQ High School Prom, at James Cook Hotel, which runs from 8 pm until midnight the same night, then you'll receive free entry into the party.     Ref: GayNZ.com (m)
