Gay magazine ‘JACK', in its second year of publication, has been nominated as a finalist for a prestigious design award. The magazine, edited by David Herkt and art directed by Julian Haldane, was nominated by the Designers' Institute of New Zealand for its BEST Design Awards, to be judged on August 25 at a ceremony in Auckland's Aotea Centre. “The nomination is a fantastic tribute to JACK and the design team behind it, both in New Zealand and in New York,” says Haldane. Designed by the Auckland team at SALT Design (Gareth Lockett, Michael Chalberg, Greg Hodgson), the magazine is “truly international” including Manhattan-based Fashion Editors. “JACK is intended to be a quality publication for a discerning gay market, and the magazine's design is a key component in this endeavour,” says Haldane. JACK was originally distributed free at gay venues, but is now available in magazine stores and corner dairies. JACK ran into some controversy earlier in the year after Whitcoulls banned the publication due to a New Zealand AIDS Foundation advertisement that featured male nudity to promote condom use. Whitcoulls has since reinstated the magazine on its shelves. The finalists for the award can be viewed on the link below. Ref: GayNZ.com (d)
