A new website offering safe sex information for gay, bisexual or bi-curious men has proved popular in its first week online, with over 1000 visitors each day. MenSeekingMen.co.nz was launched by the New Zealand AIDS Foundation to specifically target men who meet other men online for sexual encounters. Managed by the NZAF's Gay Men's Health Team, the site offers free condoms and lube, which are mailed to men in plain unidentifiable packaging; a ‘virtual nurse' who responds to enquiries about safe sex, HIV, other sexually transmitted infections and gay and bisexual men's health issues; and advice on how to remain safe after arranging a meeting with potential sexual partners. The site is specifically targeting men who have sex with men (MSM) in the North Island, which saw 94 % of new HIV infections in 2005, and in particular Auckland, where three-quarters of all New Zealand's new HIV diagnoses occur. “It's now pretty obvious that the Internet has started something of a new sexual revolution for everyone, straight and gay alike,” says Gay Men's Health Team Co-ordinator Douglas Jenkin. “Gay, bisexual and even bi-curious men who previously had no way of contacting each other can now hook up on the Internet any time or day of the week. It's ‘open all hours' basically.” Jenkin notes that in many parts of New Zealand there are few alternatives to meet gay or bisexual men for sex, with gay venues non-existent in many towns. Also, “Wellington has seen the closure of two of its gay venues recently,” namely Pound nightclub and Sanctuary cruise club. Although 94 % of new HIV infections occur in the North Island, Jenkin says the safe sex message is just as important in the South. “New Zealanders are a highly mobile population, and as HIV rates for men who have sex with men in New Zealand are now at record levels, the launch of this website is timely. Initiatives like this will play a key part in the prevention strategies for the future.” Ref: NZAF (d)
