NZer wins freestyle silver at Gay Games

Tue 18 Jul 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

Eve Tregerthan, of Porirua, has won the silver medal in the women's 100m freestyle event on the first day of competition at the Gay Games in Chicago. Tregerthan reports searing temperatures as Chicago endures a US-wide heat wave, but is “delighted” with her win. The 7th Gay Games in Chicago, currently in its third day, has almost 13,000 participants, from over 70 countries. The New Zealand team stands at 30, but many more will be joining before the opening of the inaugural Out Games in Montreal, Canada, on 26 July. Organisers of the Out Games split ties with the Federation of Gay Games over a disagreement as to the proposed scale of the event, after financial losses were recorded for both the 1998 Amsterdam and 2002 Sydney Gay Games. The Federation decided on Chicago for a lower-scale event in the original format. The Gay Games continue until July 22 and the closing ceremony will feature many famous performers, including Cyndi Lauper.     Ref: GayNZ.com (d)
