New gay Labour MP, Charles Chauvel, who has a 1-year-old son, has said his family life is “private” and not up for public consumption, reports the New Zealand Herald. Chauvel enters Parliament as next on Labour's List after the retirement of veteran MP Jim Sutton, which was announced yesterday. “I understand that people may think that they have some right to know about my personal situation because I'm an MP, but I don't agree with that,” Chauvel told the New Zealand Herald last night. Chauvel has a partner of 11 years, and a son, who lives with his mother and her partner. “They will remain nameless,” he told GayNZ.com. “The reality is that there are two parents, but four people who care very much about [my son],” Chauvel said in the NZ Herald interview. Chauvel says he would rather be judged on his abilities and contribution to Parliament, than on his family life. Ref: New Zealand Herald (d)
