Celebrations for the 20th anniversary of homosexual law reform kicked off last night with 140 people attending the Nostalgia Night at Auckland's Rydges Hotel. The event was held to remember some of Auckland's ‘old haunts' of the pre-law reform era. “I was delighted with the turnout, particularly because the age range gave a sense of the past with people there well into their seventies through to the present and future with some in their early twenties, not even old enough to remember law reform,” says organiser Michael Bancroft. Many stories were told, says Bancroft, of some of the well-known pubs popular from the 1960s through until the 1980s. These venues included The Alex (site of the present Rydges Hotel), The Great Northern Lily Pond, The Tap Room, The Shakespeare, The Empire and Backstage.
