New Zealand's LGBT community is gearing up for a weekend of celebration for the 20th anniversary of homosexual law reform. From nightclub events to a Nostalgia Night, a mayoral event to the opening of a photo exhibition – all events commemorate the decriminalisation of homosexuality on 9 July 1986. In Auckland tonight, a Nostalgia Night is being hosted at the Rydges Hotel to remember the ‘old haunts' of the pre-law reform period. Then on Saturday Urge Bar is hosting their ‘Reform 1986' party to relive the heyday of such venues as Alfie's and Staircase. Galatos is staging the ‘Celebration Dance Party' from 10pm Saturday, with special live entertainment scheduled for midnight to usher in the anniversary. The after-party will be at G.A.Y. through into Sunday. Auckland's mayor, Dick Hubbard, is personally hosting an invitation-only event, in conjunction with GABA, at Auckland's Town Hall on Saturday night, with special guest speaker, Fran Wilde, the MP who championed homosexual law reform through Parliament. On Sunday afternoon, Auckland's Gay Bridge group is holding a special function to mark the anniversary, and a commemorative church service is being held at St Matthew-in-the-City from 7.30pm, with special guest MP Tim Barnett. In Wellington, Pound Nightclub is inviting all to ‘Party like it's 1986', in a special event hosted by Polyfilla. And on Sunday evening, Rainbow Labour and GAP are celebrating the anniversary at a cocktail party at Premier House. An exhibition of David Hindley's photographs, charting the course of the homosexual law reform campaign, opens in Wellington on Sunday. The exhibition, “What Are You Afraid Of?” will move on to open in Auckland from 15 July. Ref: GayNZ.com (d)
