Pound nightclub is returning to the 80s on the eve of the 20th anniversary of homosexual law reform, with hourly drag shows and prizes for best 80s outfits. Polyfilla, Wellington's iconic entertainer, is hosting “Party like it's 1986” on Saturday night 8 July, to celebrate the achievement of New Zealand's gay and lesbian communities and to remind younger people just how lucky they are. “It's a good excuse for a party,” says Polyfilla, “but not just that – this is a real milestone that needs to be celebrated. Just think, 20 years ago, we were still illegal!” “Many of the younger generation take our freedom for granted. It's outside of the lifespan of many younger clubbers – the under-20 year olds have been lucky enough to grow up with legal freedom, but for those a bit older, at least part of their lives has been under the shadow of a law that kept us hidden from society.” The party will feature Miss Drag Wellington 2006, Arabia and second and third placegetters Sasha Frieze and Lady Trenyce, plus LaToya Jacksin and Natasha Crowe. Polyfilla will also perform in one of her last stage appearances in her hometown before leaving for Australia. Shows start at 12.30am and continue on the hour through the night. Ref: GayNZ.com (d)
