Two muscle studs will take to the stage tonight with iconic drag entertainer Miss Ribena, to push the safe-sex message in Auckland. The new condom campaign, an initiative of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation's Gay Men's Health team, will be launched tonight at Family Bar, where Mr Gay Auckland Mark Sawyer and his deputy Richard Priest will strut their stuff, and Miss Ribena will host a "drag extravaganza". Most new HIV infections are in the Auckland region, says NZAF National Manager of Health Promotion Te Herekiekie Herewini, so we "devised this new campaign in response to this." Miss Ribena and the two top place-getters of the Mr Gay Auckland pageant will appear on banners, condom packs and light boxes promoting the safe-sex message at Family Bar on K Road. "Drag queens can have a lot of influence. They're like big aunties," says Gay Men's Health Team Coordinator Douglas Jenkin. "Teaming up with an iconic drag queen like Miss Ribena and the guys from Mr Gay Auckland is all part of keeping awareness around condom use as well as providing good gay role models for safe sex." Tonight's campaign launch at Family Bar kicks off at 7pm, and will include performances by Sha-ne' ne', Miss Queenie Aotearoa, Buckwheat, and of course, Miss Ribena.
