Christchurch gay men aged 25 and over, will soon be able to receive text alerts advising of the next event for Christchurch's newest gay men's social group. The group, Plus 25 CHCH will gather on a weekly basis at local cafés, and has been set up as an alternative for gay and bisexual men who don't wish to socialise in either the bar scene or at sex-on-site venues. The group has been established as a New Zealand AIDS Foundation initiative, but will soon be run by its members, says Brent Mitchell, NZAF Gay Men's Health Promoter. It was set up in response to local demand by gay and bisexual men for social activities that didn't necessarily revolve around drinking or getting laid. The group is designed to offer a safe, non-threatening alternative for men over 25 to meet. Members will be able to call or email to find out the next meeting location, but "we'll also create a database so we can then just text out the location every week," says Mitchell.
