New LGBT group forms in Southland

Thu 8 Jun 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

A new support group for "non-heterosexual Southlanders" has been formed and will hold its first meeting tomorrow, reports the Southland Times. The group has been started by Stephen Jenkins, the health promoter for Public Health South and will provide support for the gay, lesbian, transgender, takataapui, fa'afa-fine and bisexual communities of Southland. Jenkins said many Southlanders were at risk of being socially isolated and unable to express their sexuality due to homophobia or prejudice. The group hopes to set up a support line and make resources on issues of sexuality available in Southland secondary schools. For further information, contact Stephen Jenkins on 03 211 0900.
