The New Zealand AIDS Foundation is hosting a series of forums around the country later this month to seek community input on new strategies to deal with the HIV epidemic, which saw a record 89 gay and bisexual men newly diagnosed as HIV positive last year. The last community forums, held in 2004, were very successful say the NZAF, with the Cocksure workshops for older men and the ‘Horny As' condom campaign both devised as a direct result of community feedback. This year, the NZAF is seeking input from people living with HIV, health professionals, representatives of community groups and gay and bisexual men and their families to address HIV prevention strategies, particularly in relation to the growing number of men that use the Internet to hook up with other men. "We can't stress enough how important these open community forums are for all of us," says NZAF Acting Executive Director Te Herekiekie Herewini. "NZAF is and always has been a community-based organisation, and we can't work in a vacuum. Last year's disturbing increase in HIV infections shows that we still have a lot of work to do. "These forums will help us find out what we've been doing right, what we've been doing wrong, and how we can work together to stop this virus spreading." The evening forums will be hosted in Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland, the format including an open question and answer and discussion session. The forums will be minuted and the results made available on the NZAF's website. Christchurch – 26 June, 6.30 – 9pm. Mancan House Conference Centre, Cnr Cambridge Terrace and Manchester Street.
