The Out Takes film festival opened in Auckland last night, re-branded this year as the more inclusive Reel Queer Festival, rather than the Gay and Lesbian Festival. The festival will also be held in Wellington and Christchurch, and features a number of transgender documentaries and a new feature film about intersex identity, entitled 'Both'. The new name represents Real Queer Incorporated, the community group that first founded the festival in Wellington in 1995, and also "reflects the fact that the festival includes films and documentaries with a variety of queer themes and characters," say organisers. The festival is showing a broad selection of films representative of the LGBT community, including 'Boy Culture' – a comedy about a rent boy and his flatmates; 'Unveiled' – "one of the best lesbian features we've seen in recent years," according to organisers; and, '100% Human' – a Norwegian transgender documentary musical! Out Takes will run in Auckland from May 25 to June 5 at Village SKYCITY Cinemas; in Wellington from June 1 – 11 at the Paramount; and in Christchurch from June 8 – 14 at the Regent on Worcester Cinemas.
