Material sought for Auckland HLR exhibition

Thu 25 May 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

Pictures, tapes and clippings of the Auckland-based campaign for homosexual law reform in the mid-80s are urgently sought for an exhibition planned to coincide with the 20th anniversary of law reform this July. The OUT! Organisation has opened its archives, but organisers want locals to look under their stairs and scour through their garages for old memorabilia, so they can add as much local flavour to the exhibition as possible. "We want photos of people and events; news clippings, letters, posters, sound and videotapes," says organiser Neville Creighton of the Auckland Gay and Lesbian Welfare Group. "We would like them as soon as possible to enable us to design our display around them." The theme of the exhibition will be Remember Our Past – Protect Our Future, and will run for one week from Sunday July 9, although details are yet to be confirmed. The Welfare Group has made the new training and event space at their offices at 39 Anzac Avenue available for the display. Creighton gives assurances that all material submitted will be held under the tightest care and security arrangements. Contact Neville or Mark at Gayline on 09 303 3584 to submit material that covers the homosexual law reform campaign in Auckland in the mid-80s. Creighton encourages the LGBT community to support the exhibition and take an active interest in our history throughout this year's 20th anniversary celebrations.
