Mark Sawyer, a 24yo risk analyst, has been crowned Mr Gay Auckland at a competition held at Family Bar last night. Seven contestants appeared before the capacity crowd with formal wear, swimwear and underwear shows, hosted by Family's resident entertainer, Miss Ribena, and community stalwart Alan Olsen. “It was a huge night,” Ribena told GayNZ.com. “What made it even better was the enormous diversity of the crowd. Young and old alike came out to party and enjoy the shows.” Sawyer says he was nervous as the show began, “but a few vodkas helped steady my nerves,” he said. “I was surprised to win, as I thought there were quite a few good-looking guys competing!” However, Sawyer caught the eye of judges and revellers alike, and won a prize package valued at almost $3000, including two return tickets to Sydney and $2000 cash. Sawyer hopes to take a friend to Sydney's annual Sleeze Ball toward the end of the year with his winning air tickets. First runner up on the night was Richard Priest and second runner-up was Gareth Nixson. Ref: GayNZ.com (d)
