Christchurch's second Pride Week kicked off with a resounding roar last night when hundreds of gays and lesbians turned out for the opening ceremony, a women's party and the Mr and Ms Pride contest. Organiser Brent Mitchell of the NZ AIDS Foundation estimates that 200 women gathered for the early evening women's party at Cruz bar, with many staying on for the contest, which attracted 400 revellers. "We were just overwhelmed by the numbers of people who came, and their energy... there was so much positive energy, you could see it in people's eyes!" says Mitchell, who went on to be crowned Mr Pride alongside Nicola Tomlinson who won the Ms Pride title. The pair won after appearing in beachwear, formal and avant-garde apparel sections, and answering questions before the packed audience. Judges were NZAF Chair Hoani Jeremy Lambert, sponsor Miss Sophie of Miss Sophie's Cafe and entertainer Janice Gray. MP Georgina Beyer was also on hand for the opening festivities and, in keeping with the NZAF's work to build healthier gay communities, volunteers from youth group QTopia handed out safe sex packs. The only down note for the start of Christchurch Pride Week has been the cancellation of tonight's Great Celebrity Debate due to illness. Pride Week events continue through the week and culminate with a packed schedule next weekend including a dinner marking 20 years of Law Reform and a dance party.
