Miss Drag Wellington 2006 Crowned

Mon 17 Apr 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

In a star-studded competition at Pound nightclub in Wellington on Saturday night, Arabia took the crown of Miss Drag Wellington by a mere one point. Originally from Hamilton, Arabia has been gracing the Wellington scene for the past year. Her performances were met with rapturous applause and clearly met with the approval of the judges, who were not easily impressed. The event was hosted by Wellington's ultimate diva, Polyfilla, and was presented in a new format, aptly titled "So you think you can drag?!" There were various competition sections, including impromptu performances to classic gay anthems unbeknown to the competitors in advance. Regulars and a mixed crowd eager to see the performances filled the venue to capacity. Pound has an ‘entertainment licence' that allowed the shows to run well into Easter Sunday when other clubs were closed. The outgoing Miss Drag Wellington 2005, Dawn Breaker, enjoyed the extravaganza and graciously conceded her crown, as her busy year of public engagements in the LGBT community came to a close. Sasha Frieze, the first runner-up, wowed the audience in her first ever performance on stage. Lady Trenyce impressed, coming in third. In all there were eight contestants, with revellers partying until dawn.
