'Wigs' postponed, volunteers needed

Tue 28 Mar 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

This year's Wigs on the Waterfront drag spectacular in Auckland's Viaduct has had its date shifted to this Sunday 2 April 2 Rain stopped play at last Sunday's charity event for the Cartier Bereavement Trust, leaving twelve to fifteen out-of-town drag queens stranded in Auckland, all made up with nowhere to lip-sync. Some had travelled from as far as Christchurch. Organiser Wayne Nicholas made the difficult call to postpone the event at five past six last Sunday morning. "We've got no cover for the stage," he says. "When it's wet, the marble entrance and steps in front of the restaurant is absolutely dangerous and slippery in heels, let alone what the rain would have done to make-up and wigs." Money is now being sought to cover extra expenses caused by the postponement, such as stage and DJ equipment hire, but Nicholas says none of this will affect the day's proceeds. "Everything taken on the day goes straight to the Trust, we do not use it to cover expenses," he says. Nicholas doesn't expect too many changes to the programme, as the majority of performers have been able to reschedule for this Sunday. Unfortunately, MC Deb Stanaway can't make the new date, so her duties will be taken over by popular drag hostess Miss Ribena. Some of the Wigs crew have not been as flexible with the date change, however, and replacement volunteers are urgently needed for this Sunday. "Some of the crew have pulled out because they can't come this weekend," says Nicholas, "so we definitely need crew members." Volunteers can get in touch with Wayne Nicholas via email wayne.wains@clear.net.nzor phone (021) 962 147.
