Fri 24 Mar 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

A 15-member LGBT "Rainbow" team will participate in this years Relay for Life race in Wellington this weekend. The Relay for Life is a 20 hour walk/run day aimed at raising money for the Cancer Society of New Zealand. "We each have our own personal motivation for participation – stories of hope, tragedy, survival, or just a general desire to give back to the community," says Rainbow team spokesman Tony Milne. "We also want to create a visibility of the Rainbow community participating on important general community issues. Cancer doesn't discriminate - young, old, gay, straight - it effects us all." The Rainbow team are asking members of the glbt community to come and visit them at their marquee, which will be decorated with rainbow flags. The team will be camped out there for the entire 20-hour event at Frank Kitts Park, which begins at 4pm this Saturday and runs till noon the next day. "We'd also like to strongly encourage donations or sponsorship of merchandise such as clothes, food, etc, to make the relay a lot of fun for those participating," says Milne.
