AKL: Drug-fuelled pack rape and death

Mon 16 Jan 2006 In: New Zealand Daily News

Allegations have emerged of the drug-fuelled gay pack rape of a young gay man who died five days later, on 3 December, on an Auckland motorway offramp. He had sustained serious injuries consistent with with a fall. Friends of Southland-born Konrad Kahuroa have said that the part time model and event organiser, who had recently moved to Auckland, told them shortly before his death that he was taken to a house in Auckland's inner-west suburbs - possibly Ponsonby or Grey Lynn - by a group of men he met at a bar. In a full page story The Sunday Star Times reports that Kahuroa claimed he "was injected with methamphetamine and raped by up to five men, who videotaped the ordeal." It is claimed one of the men dropped him back in downtown Auckland with the warning that he'd be killed if he told anyone what had happ"ened. Kahuroa repeated this story to several friends and his mother. An unnamed friend of Kahuroa says the gay owner of the home where the incident allegedly took place "was known for his predatory behaviour, including getting young men 'sideways' on drugs before having sex with them... he's been doing it for years." Police apparently are aware of the identity of the man, who is believed to be a drug dealer with gang connections, and plan to interview him. Kahuroa is believed to have used cannabis occasionally but was not a habitual methamphetamine, or 'P', user. However he apparently showed signs of P psychosis in the days before his death. It has also emerged that at 1am on the Saturday he died Kahuroa was admitted to Auckland Hospital with injuries he said were caused by being hit by a car. His mother suspects he may have stepped in front of a car. He discharged himself several hours later and was found dead on the inner-city motorway ramp early that afternoon.
