A Catholic GP has written to his patients saying he will no longer prescribe contraception to his patients as it is against his religion. The New Zealand Medical Association says this is legal, and other practitioners have supported his move. Similar cases in America have seen doctors refusing fertility treatment to lesbian patients, and the possibility of doctors and pharmacists refusing care and treatment to LGBT, and even HIV positive patients. The Catholic Church supports the Nelson GP Dr. Joseph Hassan, and expects other doctors to follow his lead. "New Zealand is a free country and people are entitled to say if acts are against their religion," a Church spokesperson said.
