Young Nats vote against gay adoption

Tue 4 Oct 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

Young Nats, the National Party's youth wing, have voted against supporting gay adoption at their annual conference in Wellington. The defeat of the motion, which was vigorously debated from both sides, puts a damper on hopes for those hoping the National Party to take a more progressive stance on social issues in the year to come. Also agreed upon was a motion to sell state broadcaster TVNZ to the ultra-conservative Fox network. Young Nats president Michael Mabbett said the motion was humourous on its surface "but at the same time it recognises the concern of our members at the way the Labour Party has used the TVNZ charter to satisfy its own interests, devaluing the company and ignoring the wishes of mainstream kiwis."
