Nat MP in candid anti-gay TV moment

Fri 23 Sep 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

Former National MP for Epsom Richard Worth has been caught on camera in a candid anti-gay moment from his election night party, broadcast last night on the Holmes TV programme. Approached by reporter Steve Hopkins, and clearly unaware the camera was running, Worth responded to an offhand remark about looking like a ladies' man that it was "superior to the other option" with a barely suppressed smirk. Worth lost his seat of Epsom to ACT leader Rodney Hide, but has returned to Parliament via the National Party list. He clearly believed his "option" to be superior last year as well, when he attempted to sabotage the Civil Union Act and replace it with a basic registration system that would also be open to siblings and caregivers for the elderly. Campaign for Civil Unions spokesman Cameron Law called Worth's amendment at the time "simply an attempt to belittle the relationships of same-sex couples by suggesting they are no more significant than friendships".
