National "marries" gay and lesbian couples

Fri 16 Sep 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

A nationwide letter drop by the National Party has unwittingly "married" gay and lesbian couples, by addressing their letters to "Mr and Mrs", united under one surname. The mistake has also seen flatmates arrive home to a letter, suggesting they have turned homosexual and married each other. In an ironic nod to the alleged “feminist takeover” of the New Zealand government, some legally married couples have now found themselves united under the maiden name of the wife. This National Party letter drop mix-up hails a direct contrast to the pamphlet drops and press releases by right-wing supporting church groups who claim Labour and the Green Party have a “feminist” and “homosexual agenda”, are planning to create “rainbow communities” and who have effectively allowed “gay marriage” by supporting the civil union legislation.
