Clark won

Thu 15 Sep 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

Prime Minister Helen Clark promised Kapiti's Grey Power yesterday that if re-elected, the Marriage Act will not be amended to allow same-sex couples to marry. When asked whether marriage between a man and a woman would “remain sacrosanct”, Ms Clark said that even though the Marriage Act is discriminatory against gay and lesbian couples, it will not be changed because most people support it. The Prime Minister reminded the Grey Power group that although same-sex couples cannot marry, the Civil Union Act allows people of any gender to make a commitment to each other, which is a good thing.
