Support group for partners of HIV+ men

Fri 9 Sep 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

A new social support group has been started in Auckland for men in relationships with men who are HIV-positive. The curiously-named HIV Wives was started by a group of HIV-negative men living in relationships with positive men. The group intends to meet monthly to support each other and discuss the issues that are unique to their situation. "Supporting their partner's health regime, dealing with changes in their partner's wellness, issues of intimacy and sexual safety, and learning how to put HIV in its place so it doesn't become the dominant issue in the relationship, are among some of the issues that the HIV-negative person in ‘serodivergent' relationships can face," says Wayne Otter, Regional Coordinator at the New Zealand AIDS Foundation's Burnett Centre in Auckland. Otter says the group have asked the Burnett Centre to be the contact point for anyone wishing to join.
