Tamaki spits tacks over radio interview

Fri 12 Aug 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

Christchurch talk radio host Mike Yardley says he won't be bullied out of asking the hard questions of political figures following a barrage of off-air abuse he received post-interview from Destiny Church's anti-gay "Bishop" Brian Tamaki. Yardley says he was left with the distinct impression that Tamaki, whom he describes as one of the most divisive public figures of our time, expected the right to turn his Newstalk ZB radio programme into his personal pulpit for half an hour. "The fact that Destiny has entered the political scene is an issue of legitimate public concern," he wrote in the Christchurch Star, following a torrent of complaints to the radio station over his treatment of Tamaki on-air. "I was extremely disappointed that the bishop took such strong objection to my questions... Without exception, Bishop Tamaki steadfastly refused to provide a straight answer." Yardley asked Tamaki during the interview how much money he earned from the church, and why his followers had been charged high prices to attend his ordination. Tamaki repeatedly requested that Yardley drop the "silly questions" and ask him instead about the moral predicament of the nation. The Christchurch Star reported that Tamaki delivered a barrage of abuse at Yardley off-air, including various four-letter expletives and personal abuse.
