After two years of deliberation by Parliament's justice and electoral select committee, Peter Ellis' request for a royal commission of enquiry has been rejected. Committee chairman Tim Barnett said a royal commission was not the most effective way to address the real issues of this case. The select committee report however recommends that the Attorney-General does not oppose an application by Ellis to appeal to the Privy Council. Peter Ellis has served two-third of a ten-year jail sentence, after being convicted in 1993 of sexually molesting preschoolers at the crèche where he worked. One of the allegations has since been retracted, three have been quashed and Ellis has maintained his innocence throughout. Ref: Stuff.co.nz (k)
