New Zealand Muslin leaders have distanced themselves from an email that criticised gay Ethnic Affairs Minister Chris Carter's visit to an Auckland mosque because he is "a raging homosexual." The visit came amidst concerns about anti-Muslim sentiment in the wake of the London bombings. Christchurch Muslim Abdullah Drury, social secretary of the Muslim Association of Canterbury, said in the email “Do Muslims, as people who practice the religion of Islam, really want to help and assist homosexuals in their political careers? This really does send mixed, confused and a rather garbled message about Islamic values to the wider general public." Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand president Javed Khan criticised the email. "It's just the personal view of one or two people, and we just completely ignore that," he said. Carter's office says that, generally speaking, "the ethnic community has been very favourable to him."
