Guilty verdict in Hunt murder case

Fri 22 Jul 2005 In: New Zealand Daily News

A secondary school student has been found guilty of murdering elderly gay stamp collector Robert Hunt, who was found stabbed to death at his Ellerslie, Auckland, home in July last year. A jury in the High Court today convicted Dick Faisauvale, now 19, and he has been remanded in custody for sentencing in September. Faisauvale claimed that Hunt sexually attacked him after inviting him home for a meal. He said that, fearing he was going to be raped, he cut and stabbed Hunt 42 times in a loss of self-control with a knife he found at the property. Faisauvale acknowledged that he had previously been paid for sex by another man. The crown prosecutor Philip Hamlin told the jury that Faisauvale told a friend he took a knife to steal. His motive was greed and he did the murder for money and to steal Mr Hunt's TV, DVD and his car, he said. Hunt died alone over an hour after the frenzied attack, after trying unsuccessfully to dial 111.
