2.05PM: Anti-gay 'morals' campaigner and former Christian Heritage Party leader Graham Capill has been sentenced to nine years jail after pleading guilty to charges of sexual molestation and rape involving girls between the ages of five and twelve. The offenses occurred between 1990 and 1999 while ‘committed Christian' Capill repeatedly denounced gays and lesbians as immoral and a threat to the family, children and society. Capill, father of ten children, was leader of the CHP for thirteen years and for much of that time seemed obsessed with promoting a perceived threat of homosexuality. In summing up the case, Judge Robert Kerr commented that publicly, through Capill's political party “you were the epitome of virtue... that promotion concealing your ugly and sexually corrupt behaviour.” He also said after looking at the victim impact report on Wednesday Capill got an understanding of how serious his offending was and he would be undergoing treatment when he went to jail. In court, Capill's lawyer said he had genuine remorse for his acts but an email recently distributed by Capill and read to the court today sought to minimise his offending by claiming the sexual acts were consensual. The court was also told that it was only after looking at the victim impact report on Wednesday that Capill got an understanding of how serious his offending was and he would be undergoing treatment when he went to jail.
