Former National Front leader Kyle Chapman has announced his return to politics, joining the far-right Direct Democracy party as its candidate for Christchurch East. Party leader Kelvyn Alp has been associated with a number of radical Maori groups, including the one which is currently under scrutiny for issuing Maori passports and drivers licences. He has also been involved in advertising for other former members of the military to join the Armed Intervention Force, a unit dedicated to "returning power back to New Zealanders". According to Alp, Chapman's previous association with the National Front party would not bring negative publicity to Direct Democracy. He says that both parties have many policies in common, and that "most people will forget and not worry about it too much… At the end of the day, the Labour Party is full of ex-communists and nobody blinks about them."
